The Wetlands near Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, India are probably the last Bastion where these extremely Large and Outstanding Red Headed Cranes are found in large numbers.
A flock or family of Sarus Crane ( Scientific Name Grus antigone) seen in flight over the Wetlands in an area irrigated by the Rivers Yamuna and Chambal.
The Sarus Cranes are the Tallest Flying Birds on Planet Earth and native to the Indian subcontinent.
The Wetlands are gradually being eroded and precious Habitat is being lost to Agricultural lands bearing Sugarcane.( can be seen in the backdrop in the picture below).
Soon this family of Four may not have a Home to return to ??
As flocks of different species hover in the skies above , I wonder how one would react if you see your home shrinking with every Setting Sun.
Do read earlier blogs like URBAN FORESTS ( for close ups of this bird) , WETLANDS & STORKS IN FLIGHT as well to be truly Enchanted.
I hope there is some conservation to preserve their habitat.

Birds are enchanting, are they not? I used to sit and watch them for hours, when I was a child and didn’t have so many responsibilities. I’m sorry to hear that this wetland is shrinking; I hope some of it is set aside for protection!

Very Enchanting. The site I visited was in the countryside and I did see a lot agricultural fields all over the place. So protection I think is nearly absent.

That’s sad to hear. Hopefully it receives some sort of protection soon, so that the cranes can continue to have a home!

I know WWF has made Sarus cranes one of their Priority protection birds, need to to find out more.

I had the good fortune of spotting Sarus in Little Rann of Kutch. Magnificent birds and is quite a sight when they take flight together.

where is the wildlife collage? I saw a blog on Nalsarover, you may like to correct the nomenclature to Purple Moorhen not cormorant.

Near us in the United States we have a sanctuary. I am posting a link to a story form a couple of years ago about the quantity of birds that go there. We call them Sandhill Cranes, but they appear to have red heads too. I went there a couple of months ago and the birds are still coming. http://chelseaupdate.com/sandhill-cranes-top-8100-strong-at-haehnle-sanctuary/
