The Ruddy Shelduck or Brahminy Ducks are migratory visitors from the colder North ┬аto the warmer ┬аIndian Subcontinent.
This protected stretch in the Chambal River Sanctuary provides these visitors a safe haven from humanity but are also home to Crocodiles ( do look up an earlier blog titled CROCODILES IN CHAMBAL ) , Gharials and Turtles ( do see the blog┬аTURTLE SMILES ).
Yellow Mustard flowers line the banks of the cursed River Chambal ( an earlier blog titled A RIVER CURSED gives details), now home to many endangered species of Fauna.
Basking in the Winter Sun on the banks of the River Chambal are a pair of Ruddy Shelducks ( Scientific name┬а┬аTadorna ferruginea), a Cormorant ( with wings widespread in black) ┬аand a Lapwing.
Unknown to these innocent European visitors are carnivorous┬аCrocodiles which lurk below the seemingly serene River waters.
The Ruddy Shelducks pair for life and the slightly smaller Duck on the left is the Female whereas the Male is on the right in the picture below.
Males are supposed to have a distinctive black collar around neck, which is however not distinguishable in any of the pictures in this post.”Maybe this gentleman has a┬аfree mind and thus without a collar.” ( wink)
Am always eager to discover the Enchanting facts about Flora & Fauna especially after I photograph them in the Wild.
If I had another life, I would be a wildlife photographer. LOL

Very nice, but I think ruddy chelducks breeding in Europe will most probably stay during winter in Africa like the other migratory birds visiting us here in Europe during spring and summer, but India is also much warmer then. Sometimes, I would also like to be a bird just loafing around the globe.

Migration of Birds is well recorded and you could check up on the net or contact Birdlife International. They migrate to the Indian Subcontinent is a well established fact , further underlined by the pictures in the post.

Do you happen to know why they are called Brahminy ducks? The Brahminy myena is called so because of a black knot on its helmet (like the Brahminical ‘kudumi’)

Interesting. There is a Brahminy Kite too and a key common feature is the Rust body and white/whitish head, that is true for the Brahminy Myna as well. The Ruddy Shelduck has a place in Buddhist folklore as well.

I was just going to write you about the Brahminy Kite. Interesting that that name is used for multiple creatures.

thanks, I think ( am not sure) the Rust colour is described as Brahminy

Thanks Mukul for reminding me how much I love ducks. I remember a holiday in Tasmania Australia when the ducks would come into the annexe of our caravan in the morning and wake us. I would sit and look at them for hours, captivated by their beautiful colours.
