Bouquets of Red Star shaped blooms adorn the Bushes of these Jungle Geraniums or Jungle flame ( English) , Rukmini ( Hindi) , Ixora coccinea ( Scientific name) at the Corinthian Resort & Club , Pune, Maharashtra, India,
Native to Southern India and Sri Lanka these lovely star shaped blossoms belong to the Coffee family Rubiaceae. Cinchona from which the anti malarial life saving drug quinine is derived is from a plant belonging to this splendid Family of Red Stars.
The Rukmini Flowers are named after a Goddess from the Hindu Pantheon of Gods and I read somewhere connected to enhanced sexuality.
All parts of this plant ( flowers, roots and leaves) which bears these lovely Red Crosses on tubular stalks have multiple Medical Uses.
The plant itself purifies water by removing harmful heavy metals like Lead and Mercury.
These Gorgeous Red Stars contain Leucocyanidin glycoside and are known for antimicrobial properties thus being prescribed in natural medicine as a remedy for dysentry.
The leaves contain lupeol which has well known anti inflammatory properties.
The Red Star is not only a treat for sore eyes but has numerous Medicinal benefits as well, some of which I have mentioned above.
A Wonderful treat indeed to see them stretch every fibre within to touch the Skies above. ( see the featured image please)
