DEVIL’S TRUMPET

ANGELS IN PINK and ENORMOUS TRUMPETS are two previous blogs which if read along with this post would enhance manifold the Spellbinding ways of Nature.

The Devil’s Trumpets were spotted along the Pune -Solapur Highway while enroute to the 1200 year old  Bhuleshwar Temple.

The Devil’s Trumpet ( English), Datura ( Hindi), Datura inoxia (Scientific Name) while similar to The Angel’s Trumpet in may ways has however some key differentiating aspects.

A key aspect which can be clearly spotted from a distance is that the flowers of The Devils Trumpet all face upwards whereas the flowers of The Angels Trumpet hang down like Bells.

Unattended the Trumpets grow wild and the leaves gather dust.

The fruits or Spiny Orbs were discretely hidden under the leaves and had to make my way through dense undergrowth to photograph them. During the  Monsoons  most plants grow rapidly due to the Rains and High humidity.

The Ancient Bhuleshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the god who swallowed Poison. The Datura as the Spiny Orbs are referred to are  the source of  many Intoxicants and often placed in Shiva temples as reverence to the Lord.

Also called Indian Apple and Prickly Burr on account of these Spiny Capsules.

  12. മലയാളത്തിലിതിനെ കോളാമ്പിപ്പൂ എന്നു വിളിക്കുമെന്നാണെന്റ ഓർമ്മ. ഉമ്മത്തിൻ ചെടിയും ഇതാണോ എന്നു സംശയമുണ്ട്. നീല ഉമ്മം, വെള്ള ഉമ്മം എന്നിങ്ങനെ രണ്ടിനമുണ്ട്. ഇവ രണ്ടും വിഷമുള്ളതാണെങ്കിലും ആയുർവേദ മരുന്നുകൾക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്. എന്തായാലും നല്ല ചിത്രങ്ങളും വിവരണവും… മുകുൽ ചന്ദ് you are rocking👍

      1. In Malayalam, we call it by the name Kolambipoo. I have a whether it is Ummam, ayurvedic medicinal plant. Ummam has two varieties -blue and white. Both are poisonous but have medicinal value. Your pics are beautiful and the note given is very informative… You are rocking Mukul. (This is the translation of what I have written in Malayalam). Now happy?😉

    Sometimes I do wonder, whether the plants in themselves are aware…that we humans have given them exotic and polarizing names :-)… whilst they rejoice and sway in being themselves
