BABY ELEPHANTS

The Adorable Babies you see in the Pictures in the Blog are of two orphans who were rescued by the Forest Department from the Konni Forest of Kerala.

The Large Wooden Cage you see in the background  called Aanakoodu in Malayalam ( the local language in Kerala)  is the current home of these Babies located in the Elephant Rescue Centre in Konni,Pathanamthitta District, Kerala.

Seems Thoughtful or Maybe Sad ?

A Large Open Enclosure outside the Aanakoodu  is the Play Ground for these Baby Elephants who seem to enjoy  the freedom from their respective cages.

A She Elephant was also rescued from a nearby forest , but her heavy metal chains and her reaching out to me (for Help ? ) make me wonder if they are Really Happy being Rescued.

Observe Her Eyes in the picture below, they seem to Speak Volumes. What do you read??

Rescued ???

Have posted a blog titled MAMMOTH BATH from this very Rescue Centre a few days ago with pictures of a Tusker having a Bath, who was also in Chains.

I wonder what Ominous Futures hangs over the Baby Elephants who will be used by the Forest Department to promote what is labelled ECOTOURISM.

Tourist will Ride on these Elephants after being trained by a process which is both Cruel and Torturous.

      1. Mukul, those chains are way too short to “permit all activities.” It seems ironic to me, at a time when people are being attacked by “cow defenders” that India isn’t questioning seriously the cruel taming of elephants.

      2. You are mistaken there is a lot of hue and cry over Elephants and Chains etc.
I will post pictures of the Tusker lying and getting up while having a bath. Chains are not a good idea, have you any suggestions how to relieve the Elephants of them

  1. Is that course (using elephants for “ecotourism”) the likeliest one? If so, “rescue” seems the wrong word for such a practice. Thanks for both sharing pictures and raising awareness.

  2. This is just so sad. Elephants belong in large herds, roaming free in nature, and learning all the wisdom from the Matriarch over many years.
It is we humans who have destroyed their habitat and force them to need ‘rescuing’.

  3. I love elephants and it makes me very sad when I think about their future. No animal should live in chains. It s a shame how they are “trained” or better beaten to do what those people want. I always ask my friends and followers NOT to ride elephants.

For sure it s good to help animals in need. But when you can’t get them back to wildlife, you should give them a natural life – not chains, fear and loneliness 😦

  4. The poor female elephant looks so sad to me, I wish she had more freedom. Do you know more about the process of domesticating elephants for use in tourism? I’d like to know what elements are torturous and cruel, because I don’t know much about that topic.

    1. A lot is appearing in our Newspapers . However have no indepth knowledge either. chains definetly upset them , yet they are used by one and all. This is not from a commercial set up like a Circus etc , but that maintained by the Forest Department

    2. From what I have read a training called “crush” is used, in which the elephants are out in cages to small for them to move, and beaten on a daily basis with barbed instruments. This goes on for several weeks.

And is why I will never ride an elephant.

  5. My parents always used to tell me stories about visiting a elephants orphanage in Sri Lanka back in the 80’s. I’ve always wanted to visit one for myself. Elephants are such beautiful animals.
