The Bougainvillea is named after a French Naval Commander and was introduced by the British in India in the 19th Century.

Bougainvilleas are ferocius climbers  and have set this tree AFLAME.

The blooms envelop the Tree

The enchanting scarlet blooms are actually bracts ( leaves pretending to be petals). The Flowers are inconspicuous, tubular and of the same colour as the three  three faux petals or bracts which surround it.( see the featured image)

The  enchanting Scarlet Bougainvillea seen in these pictures is in all probability Bougainvillea glabra ( Scientific name)

This sturdy vine/shrub or plant with tiny sharp thorns is extremely hardy and thrives in the warm and dry climate of India.

Numerous cultivated hybrids can be seen across the world now , however one hybrid called TEMPLE FIRE caught my attention and seems closest in spirit to the species seen in the pictures above.

The colourful Bougainvillea can be seen in various colours and is also the national Flower of the country of GUAM.

      2. The only saving grace in India is that Nature is worshipped.Maybe that keeps the greed of Humans at bay to a marginal extent. Otherwise all Humans are the same across the world irrespective of colour.

  1. Simply magical… I would love to see a before and after of the trees… immolation. I would think that leaves would be better prey than flowers, however. Why would a flower pretend to be one?

      1. The tree looked leafless, the creeper/vine or bougainvillea had grown all over it. If you se the feautured image carefully you will see the thorny vine and the faux petals ( they have viens as leaves do)

  2. We used to have these growing over the carport when we lived in Zimbabwe years ago. Ours were pink and purple. They were very hard to chop them back as they have nasty sharp thorns all over the place and twist and turn among whatever they grow upon. Very beautiful to see, though.
